We’re pleased to announce the release of the HorseGame demo! Taking place on the grounds of an abandoned monastery overlooking the pristine coastal waters of Saddle Greccia, the playable area is about the size of a 12-16 player multiplayer map and is packed with a variety of enemies, collectables, and combinable spells to play around with.

Available for Windows, OSX, and Linux, you can find the download for the demo below, and you can also find the gameplay trailer here. We’d like you to keep in mind that this is still an early demo of the game, so what you see here will still be undergoing many changes before the release of the full game.

If you are using Google Chrome, it may try to block the download because Google Chrome is silly. We Pin-key-pie promise that it’s safe! To skip the filter, hit Ctrl-J to open your downloads window and click “Recover Malicious File”

Windows: http://equidev.net/scripts/download.php?os=windows

OSX: http://equidev.net/scripts/download.php?os=osx

Linux: http://equidev.net/scripts/download.php?os=linux

Could it be possible for you to put this on another downloading platform? Cos I can’t use the MEGA download site, the download just aborts itself as soon it reaches 100%

Reply

Then it tells me “Horse Game – Windows.zip may harm your browsing experience, so Chrome has blocked it.”

I know that it won’t, but with a message like that, I’m err’ing if I should just download it anyway.

Sorry, the game does not support 32 bit at this time. It might in the future, but I expect it will run slowly on such a system.

I achieved Euphoria in that demo.
I also got rekt by frogs.
Seriously though, i am monitoring the progression of this game, because it sure seems promissing

I cant seem to open the game on mac, it says: THe application Horse Game- OSX can’t be opened.

Yeah, it seems running the game on OSX support is a bit flaky. Unfortunately I don’t have a Mac to test the game on right now.

I just don’t think it works on OS X Yosemite (10.10).
It doesn’t work on my iMac (which is using Yosemite), but my older MacBook uses an older OS and the demo runs.
I hope it can be programmed to run on the newer operating system soon.

The Unity3D engine allows me to export to many platforms easily – although they don’t always work perfectly. I’m still able to send the .app to a few friends to make sure it actually runs, but that’s about it.

So I’ve now tested it under both 10.9.5 and 10.10.2 and neither one will launch the game. 10.9.5 gives no errors or anything while 10.10.2 gives the “The application Horse Game- OSX can’t be opened.” dialog.

To download this game, you made me use Internet Explorer.
But oh lawd was it worth it.
Like really, for a demo, it’s like one of the most complete one out there.
The combinations are great, the spells themselves are good (Surprise + Buckshot + Celestial op)
But when i started the game at first, i just got exploded by the frogs and the flamethrowing ponies.
The damage they do may be a little bit too high.
And i achieved euphoria.
And i’m looking for a way to open the door with a sun on it.
And this game will be SO AWESOME.
Congrats, really.

Once you acquire an element by breaking stuff around the level, you can make any combo you like with that element. Just experiment!

This game has alot of potential to be an awesome exploration game with fun combat! The game itself ran as smooth as silk with no problems to be had whatsoever and the simplicity of the game is quite beautiful, visually and gameplay wise. I hope when you get further along in development down the road that you’ll tease us with another demo like this one! Good luck!

Unity3D? Never heard of it. Does it use OpenGL? I have lots of experience in c/c++ OpenGL programming, with a couple different engines.

This game is not easy! Those frogs hurt! Alot! Took me several tries to beat it and I only got stuck in the floor once! Thats pretty good for a demo in my opinion. I’m definitely looking forward to this c:

This had a good learning curve. Was really tough to start, then I got progressively better as I learned the enemies’ movement patterns and attacks. By the end, I was wrecking everything because I’d learned the system.

The spell leveling system is a little wonky. Level 1 spell is very useful, 2 is mostly useless (since you can only spawn one at a time), 3 is more useless than 2, 4 is incredibly useful (da best), and 5 is decent once you get the timing down–and that cooldown is scary if you accidentally don’t hold down the mouse button long enough.

I’d imagine everything will be ironed out and re-balanced over and over until the game is smooth, so greatly looking forward to the future builds. I loved this demo and will definitely share it with everyone I come across.

Reply
Duplex Fields

Try doubling the first spell. It makes surviving enemies much easier, because it increases the range. After three hours, I can now beat the demo with just Woderbolt-Wonderbolt, Wonderbolt-Surprise as a grenade launcher, Wonderbolt-Buckload for most of the rest of the game.

Don’t underestimate the double wonderbolt.

I keep crashing. I attempted to lower the graphics quality because I’m not sure if my computer has a good enough graphics card, but that does nothing for me. How do I send a crash report? Also, if I am not able to send one, what possible ways are there for me to fix this issue?

Beautiful job! Runs perfectly, enemies are varied, the combo spell system should be interesting. Have to agree, spells 1 and 4 are about the only things I use though, but balance can be worked out later.

Only issue that came up, getting stuck on terrain, like the side of a rock forcing you to exit.

tested 2 systems, AMD Hex core and Intel Quad, both running win 7 x64 ultimate and both running nVidia GPU’s , 60fps max details flawless.

The current version will probably not be available for 32 bit systems. Since we are unable to optimize much at this time, I doubt the game would even run well enough on a PC that was 32 bit anyway.

After you have something built in the spells column, press tab to close it. Now you can press number keys (or scroll wheel) to select a spell, then left-mouse to fire.

Really enjoied the demo. I’d like to pay attention to couple moments:
1) Mobs are unable to swim and actually don’t realise it. Ponies and … er… cats? can walk in water, but cannot swim and frogs blow from just touching water. It’s actually pretty exploitable in solo campaign.

2) Melee is almost useless in compartion with magic. While i receive extremely heavy damage in melee, only unicorns and plants have ranged attaks and their spells are really, really slow (not to mention that wonderbolt plus shotgun spell have bigger range) and i just avoid them. I think of some “snipers” with changed balance when you actually have to go melee. Or just reducing effectiveness of spells on “trash” mobs because for now sword is just tool for opening boxes.

I love it! This game has huge potential! The concept is amazing, most of the design is pretty solid so far, and I can see the devs have good taste in <a href="http://puu.sh/f0XLX/3dfee65fea.jpg" title="socks pony footwear. “Press f to get swag”, lmao

There are a few issues that I think need to be addressed, though.

First of all, the aiming mechanic is really derpy (no pun intended) because of the third-person viewpoint. This wouldn’t be as much of a problem if not for the fact that the range for the wonderbolt spell is the same as the aggro range for enemies. This makes it next to impossible to take anything down without getting your ass kicked a bit, and with how infrequent the health-regenerating carrots are, this means death is annoyingly frequent. Which is even more annoying given that the level and your spells all reset when you respawn. I suggest either giving the player a greater spell range, adding a first-person camera option, or implementing some sort of aim-helping mechanic like you might see in some of the new Sonic games.

Also, as far as the melee attack, sometimes the sword goes right through something and it doesn’t damage it. I’ve tried figuring out if there’s a small but exact distance you have to be from something for it to work, but it seems like it just half the time works and half the time doesn’t. This leads to me spamming e while fighting those lion-things (not entirely sure what they are. manticores?) and still getting damaged despite my best efforts.

Lastly, the damn creeper frogs. (That’s what I’m calling them, because I play Minecraft, and they remind me a lot of creepers. They blow up in your face in order to murder you, and they’re green.) They are responsible for literally every single time I’ve died in the game so far. They can jump insanely far and do a crazy amount of damage, their aggro range is almost twice that of what it should be to make it anywhere near possible to beat them, and they travel in bucking packs.

From what I’ve seen of the game so far, those are the only real major problems. Keep up the great work; I definitely look forward to the full game!

Played this game the day I downloaded, ragequitted from frogs. Decided to try again next day, leveled until I got Buckload. Used Wonderbolt, Buckload, Buckload combo. Only combo used for entire level.(Until the Creepy sun door) Shot at ground around me when frogs attacked. Never died to a frog(or anything else) again.

Went back, messed around with spells. Found my favorites
Eventual spell I had armed:
Wonderbolt, Buckload, Buckload
Wonderbolt, Wonderbolt, Wonderbolt
Surprise, Buckload, Celestial
Shining Armour, Buckload
Shining Armour, Buckload, Surprise
Celestial
Wonderbolt, Celestial, Surprise
Wonderbolt, Celestial, Buckload
Wonberbolt, Shining Armour, Shining Armour

10/10 For OP Ricocheting Shotgun. Would play this again anytime.(In fact I did, thrice.) CANNOT wait to see more.

Make sure you don’t have a joystick plugged in. The game might be interpreting it as a control device.

Yay899

I don’t know if Surprise, Buckshot, Buckshot is working as intended. It tends to result in an instant explosion centered around the player as well as shooting massive amounts of buckshot in all directions.

Reply
Princess Mephi

Having Buckload in the second spot of a spell will alter the way the first spell is cast. I.E. Shining Armor>Buckload will spawn in many shields at once. After this, it will continue its average continuation. So Surprise>Buckload>Buckload will buckload many surprises instantly, then progess to the second spell, shooting buckloads out of the surprise, and continuing with the third spell, repeating the process. Hopefully this helps explain what is occurring.

Yet another person here to praise the work you’ve done so far… XD
You completely deserve it, though! I mean, I’ve tried LoE, but (No offense to them; they’re doing a good job, too) but everything in it looked and felt… dead, I guess is the word. It felt like a Gmod spinoff.

Yours on the other hand has a brilliant artistic vision, with a shader style I’m loving, great color palette, intriguing level design (well, what you have so far), a unique setting, and so much more. I especially like the character model: Animations flow, the hair and tail have physics, the head follows the cursor, (Nice touch, btw), and with the way that the weapon appears/disappears doesn’t affect the immersion at all.

The spell crafting idea is honestly a stoke of genius, as well. I’ve never seen something like this implemented into a game (Or at the very least, nothing nearly this hands-on or customizable)

This is a brilliant demo, and I hope that you continue in making it even better!

Really amazing job guys. I haven’t noticed many issues. A few that caught my eye were occasionally when killing an enemy, the enemy’s body will still be running after you, but deal no damage. Another is that while running, occasionally you will be unable to pic up cosmetics, they will simply disappear. Aside from these minor issues, I really enjoyed what has been released thus far, and have even continued to play it. Also, on an earlier comment, you mentioned looking for a mirror download. Have you tried using Puush? Puush.me is a completely free online drive. Sadly, I am unsure of the maximum limit of the drive. Also, I had previously e-mailed Ben, and I mentioned Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Alicorns. Will any of the 3 become playable “races” in later versions of the game? Thanks guys, you are doing an amazing job.

P.S. I forgot to mention that after changing up my spells, the game freezes for a split second when leaving the spell editor. Not a huge problem, and I understand why, but I would like to see this touched up in the future.

I’ll be honest, I went into this demo with ridiculously high expectations.

It met those expectations.

Seriously though, great job! This was absolutely incredible and I had a blast, even though I’ve only played it for about half an hour so far. I really don’t know what else to say, other than to mention my one real issue with the game, I suppose.
It’s quite similar to others’ suggestions, really – the enemy-damage-to-health-regen balance seems a little off. The enemies don’t really do excessive amounts of damage though in my opinion (although I did get creamed by the flamethrowers when I accidentally stumbled in there during my first five minutes), it’s more that the carrots don’t refill enough health.
Just bumping up the effectiveness of those, perhaps introducing a more effective, portable ‘potion’-style device as well, passive health regen, or even just not resetting everything upon death would really help to balance it out. I’m sure you’re probably working on something like those things already, just figured I’d throw in my two bits.

Also, that top hat and bowtie look very tantalising. I imagine they would very nice with purple sockies, if I could manage to reach either of them.

Thanks again for the great demo – you can be sure I’ll keep playing this for quite a while and I’m really looking forward to the next one! Keep up the great work!

Okay, So I’ve finally managed to finish the demo (it was tough but once I worked out that I could: A – stack three Wonderbolts, and B – exit when things got tough in order to respawn with full spell-progress and health, it got a lot more manageable) and I have just one more little critique – I think the correct spelling might be “MacGuffin”, rather than “McGuffin” as it is in the game. I’m not sure, I could be wrong or it could just be a matter of preference (not to mention it may not even be a word used in the final game), but I just thought I’d bring it to your attention if it was indeed an error.
Also, sorry about the excessive italics in that last one. I only meant to italicize one word, but apparently I have no idea how to end an HTML tag.

This game is amazingly awesome, I finished quite quickly once I learnt the patterns of the enemies and that frogs can’t go into water, but my favourite combo of spell was 2,3,3 because it cleared out all enemies around you if you shot in front of yourself and then it would shoot the buckload shots everywhere which were a great way to deal with some of the enemies.

Awesome demo, had a great time playing this and eventually explored everything, and then got killed by a random spawning frog. ;P
I was hoping to explore the Town but that wasn’t possible, maybe in the future? *wing wing nudge nudge*

I hope you’re gonna include some (simple yet effective) multiplayer Deathmatch or CTF action at some point, it would be a lot of fun I think to have some online matches going on with some special maps for them while singleplayer is being worked on, just an idea though, because, thing is when I first saw this game many many months ago I though this was going to be a online multiplayer 3rd person fps. ^^;

All that aside though, I have a few suggestions regarding the demo, it would probably be a good idea to increase, or let the player increase the Reticule/cursor size and colour, it would make aiming a bit easier in my opinion since I constantly found myself looking for that tiny dot so I could aim properly.
It would also be nice to have a menu for the “swag” items to choose what you want, kinda like a inventory screen so to speak.
A mechanic to quicksave your progress at any time would also be beneficial. πŸ˜‰
And lastly, maybe a dodge move like in Unreal Tournament would be a nice addition, just double tap a key on your movement keys to perform a dodge in said direction, it could improve combat, especially with the pony’s that shoot, not that they are hard to avoid but I assume a finished game would get harder and harder, so maybe it’s worth a look perhaps.

Perhaps a lot of what I’m suggesting here is nonsense but I think at least the reticule thing might be something worth looking into. πŸ™‚

You can explore the distant lands. When you cross the bridge, you can hit Escape on the prompt. The prompt will remain, but your controls will be restored. Now you can explore to your heart’s content.

Keep in mind the distant lands are meant to be distant, so it takes quite a while to explore. It’s worth it, once or twice, especially falling off the edge of the world. However, it gets old quick.

I wish there was a “fly” cheat so I could see that nifty tower’s architecture up close.

Or a “reverse gravity” spell.

The sun door was a bit obvious. Not really complaining though I guess, and the amounts of spell combinations are incredible considering it’s only a demo at this point. I’m very excited to see where this goes.

Aw man, this was so cool. I believe I already gushed it’s praise elsewhere… So I will simply say “I can’t wait to see more”. This was really well done, and quite interesting. All my complaints are pretty much already written for me above, so I’ll abstain.

Now that I know how to “save” (since I just kept dying & dying, losing all my spells & getting somewhat discouraged) by exiting & returning, I’ll be working hard to finish this. Good work; we’ll keep watching!

I just finished playing the demo and found it interesting enough, and since I think my feedback will be appreciated, I decided to give you my full review on my experience with the demo:

Graphics
The graphics really astonished me. I had become rather skeptical of having MLP style ponies in 3d games, because the 3d shape often looks bad and the animations just don’t seem right.
So I was positively surprised by the way the game looked. The comic-like shader makes the characters look amazing. The animations are totally smooth. Okay, the galloping and jumping cycles could use some tweaking, but the way the character reacts to both walking and rotating the camera really immerses you into the game.
The spells could look better, but I guess they aren’t the final version and will still see some tweaking.
Oh, one more thing, the character tilts sideways, when standing parallel to a hill slope, which looks really weird. Making her only adapt to the terrain when facing to or away from the hill would be better.

Controls
Controls again are very smooth. The only thing I didn’t like was jumping. I found myself way too often in situations where I wanted to jump over a small ledge in full gallop, only to slam into it, because the character didn’t jump upwards at all. She should also not put the sword away while jumping. The way it is currently, you need a timeout after a jump before you can melee again. I often missed being able to cut mid-jump or immediately after the landing.

Fighting
The fighting itself had me kind of ambivalent. Parts were pretty fun, but others quickly became boring or frustrating.
First of, melee fights: Using the sword to destroy boxes looks awesome. I also enjoyed smashing those frogs. The bigger animals (Dogs? Rats? Baby manticores?) were rather frustrating though as there is no real possibility of protecting yourself. If they get close, they just jump you and even if you manage to hit them, you still get the damage.
I would like the idea of having them fly away a bit if you hit them with the sword, like the bodies do after they die. That way, if you managed to time your melee right, you would get no damage and a small pause, where you can realign yourself.
Magic fighting is fun, but the problem here is that depending on the spell (or combination) it’s allways either very hard, or way too easy. Just combining three Wonderbolts gives you a three times bouncing spell with rather high fire range that already homes in on the enemies a little.
Using one Buckload instead of a Wonderbolt (Uhg, you really have to rename the spells!) creates you an extremely OP, two times multiplying long range spread, that you just have to hit anywhere near your enemies to kill them with two or three shots maximum. The Surprise, Shield and Celestia spells were rather useless though, no matter in what combinations I tried them. They sometimes worked adequately well at taking out distant targets, but they take too long to recharge to really hold themselves against a even a triple Wonderbolt.

Conclusion
All in all the game looks pretty solid and has decent controls. Fighting is fun, but definitely needs some tweaking and balancing.

The spell builder is a pretty interesting idea itself, but the nature of it raises the problem, that most engineered spells will be pretty useless, while a few combinations quickly turn out as superior. After that it becomes rather boring.

This could be changed by giving the spells material based properties.

You could for example include a lightning arc as spell element. It would be pretty hard to aim under normal conditions, but be attracted by conductive materials, which would make it devastating in water or on enemies wearing metallic armor.
If combined with a Surprise, you could either create a Surprise that grills everything conductive nearby, or a spell, that spreads Surprises all over a metallic surface in a certain radius, depending on the order of the two.

The same concept could be used for light beams, that get reflected by some surfaces, but just disappear on others, fire spells that only really work in dry areas, freezing spells, that work best in cold and wet areas, crystal magic, that gets multiplied by hitting certain gems, and many others.

By this you force the player to prove situational awareness and adapt to his surroundings, making the game immensely more interesting.

If I’m correct it would be totally awesome for puzzling too.
You might for example have to set something outside of the flame-spell’s range on fire, to progress in the campaign. For this you would have to combine the fire spell with something that can cross distance in between.
Or you need to destroy the artifact creating a shield that blocks your way, but in order to hit it, your spell combination needs to reflect across different surfaces to get around the shield.

It would probably be a bit difficult to make these puzzles seem as part of the surroundings and not as build just for the purpose of testing the player.
But if you manage, then you get an awesome combination of Indiana-Jones-like-adventure, MLP magic and a touch of Portal.
I don’t actually have all the details on how this could work, but if you are interested, I could round out the concept some more.

I played through your game and I loved it, I have a youtube channel and in the past I have interviewed another my little pony game developer about his game and I was wondering if you would give my friend and I the same opportunity to interview you about this game. We both found your demo highly enjoyable and would love to know more about the future of this game, thank you.

Thanks for the offer, but we’re not interested in public interviews at this time. We’ll be focusing on just development for a long time.

Wiser words have never been said, I’m not sure if this project is continuing or not but I’ve played a lot of fan-made pony games and this one has something that most don’t. Good tone and more importantly, atmosphere. MLP:FiM had that when Faust was still in charge and this feels like a video game equivalent of what the show was like way back when. Just as the show reminded me of the power puff girls (without the powers) when I first watched it. This reminds me of Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker (two very cartoony parallels, one for watching and one for playing). And that’s a very GOOD thing. If I had to magnify any criticism made towards this game it would have to be that it’s so hard to aim spells. Maybe a lock-on mechanism for nearby enemies would solve that (kind of like wind waker did). Seriously, if someone on your graphics team DIDN’T intentionally make this whole demo feel like that section of wind waker where you’re under water in hyrule field (a place that in that game I would’ve liked to stay longer, a lot longer) then you guys just unintentionally recreated a masterpiece of feeling and scope when making this (changing the way you aim could also allow you guys to decrease the range and speed of the sword swing if you saw fit since you’d be more assured that you’d hit your target). If ironed out and completed, it would rival many good gamecube games of the time. Arguably that’s the golden age of gaming (at least 3-d gaming) so keep it up! And please, keep this alive by staying away from the watchful eye of hasbro.

Is there a way to save at all? Even if its just accessories, or if it saves my spells too, that would be AWESOME.

Spells and combinations are all auto-saved, they’ll be there whenever you restart the game!

Is this gonna become a full game? If so, THAT WILL BE EPIC!!!!!!!!!! I love the demo. Its awesome. Just hate on when you die, you have to start all over. Kinda reminds me of Dark Souls a little.

Oh, and what are you planning on doing next with the game? Is Multiplayer gonna be here for it in the near future or gonna be like a half a year to 3 years to get it in? Just want your estimate and input on these things a little. πŸ˜›

We hope to have some major improvements including co-op multiplayer by this summer!

I think I might found a bug that I noticed too. Sometimes a frog outa the pack will do a last minute hit when your at low health. Then it kills you. I had it happen 1 once but, I didn’t notice it till now. Dunno if thats a feature or not?

Example:

Health Bar
[+++ ]

*Gets some life points*

Health Bar
[+++++++++++++ ]

*Frogs jump as soon as I finish up gaining some health & gems*

[ ]

*Dies*

I don’t know if this helps, but every time I try to run the mac version it gives me error report that mentions this:
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

(It’s not the full error report though, just a bit I thought might help you getting the OSX version stable)

WOW This is a cool game!

This game is going to be so awesome when it’s finished!

However, there are quite a few things that bother me about it, and I’m guessing that a lot of them have been fixed in the 6 months since this update, but I’m going to mention them anyway.

1. The menus. The menus are awful but it’s understandable that they would come last because gameplay is more important.
2. Lack of saving. I get extremely frustrated when I die all of a sudden and find I lost all my spells
3. there are a few bugs, like enemies shooting through walls.
4. the swag items are really cool but I wish I could switch between them at will
5. the enemies don’t give you any sort of benefit when killed
6. lack of cooldown timer. perhaps have some kind of indicator how much energy your horn has at the moment
7. I think she should be able to move faster when running, and obviously her gallop anim is just her trot anim sped up, which I understand is lower priority at the moment

But overall I really like it and am looking forward to future releases

Punch/kick/buck melee from the beta is no longer used? I mean.. fighting is good, and it isn’t same genre as Gmod or Impressive Title, but why give up animation extra, since it was used earlier and things..

Reply
Sprakle

Hoof-based melee performed very poorly against more enemies due to it’s very small range and the need to orient your character carefully. I might bring it back in the future with some improvement though.

I’m just curious how development is going for this game. It seemed to just drop out of public recollection after February.

Development is still going on, if slowly. But we’re not releasing much more public stuff until a lot of progress has been made.

Good Start. One of the best 3D platform MLP games I have played.
A few issues, player had trouble jumping while next to a wall. player has also fallen though ground at times.
Game looks grate. I have been able to play it at full settings. My PC is not a high end gaming PC, but it can run most such applications fairly well. I am a Unity pro user, learning to make physically controlled and dynamically poseable rigs. I suggest updating to Unity 5. Even if not a pro user like me. You get all to most of the benefits of going pro with version 5. Better shadows and such. All without paying for it with an extra asset.
Your game is fun, but the physics is still glitchy. I know very well the frustration in making physics work well. If you have any questions for me, best to contact me at glenfoxh@gmail.com. Not sure what I can help you with. I have a few of my own projects I am working on. Nothing out to play with as of yet.
Keep up the good work. I have been following this project of yours for a while. This is quite the update over your past test examples.

Its hard to say when no one has posted any new news on the site since 2015. Its already 2017. That’s a long time to not keep fans up to date.
